“Accumulated Matter is a collection of drawings that reference the natural world. The exhibition is comprised of three different explorations that collectively use fine line work to delve into various aspects of the environment.

The individually hand painted strokes of A Storm Event suggest the ferocious energy of a rainstorm as the marks move across the paper. The accompanying electronica sound composition by the composer Anna Rubin incorporates synthesized sounds, field recordings and processed recordings of Ha’s poem, ‘A Storm Event’, spoken in English, French and Vietnamese. As it swells and subsides, the multi-layered music evokes the powerful sweep of the artwork.

The New General Catalogue drawings are named after the astronomical categorization of deep-sky objects. Forms bordered by irregular edges, the drawings initially seem to be made with the fluidity of paint strokes, but upon closer examination reveal themselves to be comprised of small, hand drawn points of color.

Gold Bubbles originates from the unpredictability of paint pens nearing the end of their life cycle. When the ink flow begins to form splotches and blots, the resulting marks are incorporated into a meditative circular form, expressing the movement of air bubbles.

The drawings in this exhibition represent an accumulation of small mark making into large, tangible matters. The resulting images, abstract in form, reveal a tenuous relationship to the natural world.”

Artist Statement:

I transform small scale gestures into landscapes of the disappearing natural world. Brush strokes overlaid with precise pen work are amalgamated into mountains, seascapes, and uncultivated forms. The meditative line work imbues the pieces with an atmospheric sense of place, while the fragility of the works on paper reinforces a delicate relationship with nature.

My work often reflects the labors of motherhood where the repetitiveness of our daily tasks passes unnoticed and unrewarded. Assembled in snatched moments of time, the grand scale of my work celebrates the joy of small moments aggregated over time. The vast landscapes and abstract fields testify to the power of preservation and patience.
